Houston’s Memorial area borders the north side of Buffalo Bayou to the west of downtown. Development in the Memorial area began in the 1960s. Today, the Memorial area is known for its wonderful houses and fine lifestyle.

Memorial has several communites within its boundaries, plus six villages which are small cities independent of the city of Houston’s government. These cities, known as “The Villages,” are: Bunker Hill Village, Hilshire Village, Hedwig Village, Hunters Creek Village, Spring Valley Village, and Piney Point Village. When the Katy freeway was constructed, Hilshire and Spring Valley were divided from the other four villages. The Memorial area is very luxorious and many popular Houstonians live here.

One of Houston’s best known and best loved parks, Memorial Park is located where a World War I military camp, Camp Logan, once was located. Today, the park offers biking and hiking trails, a tennis facility, a golf course, a fitness center, and swimming pool. Only minutes away from downtown Houston, the park features a fresh natural oasis among the active big city. 

Memorial City Mall has many stores, including Sears, Target, and Macys, as well as several other great retailers, like Abercrombie & Fitch.

Home prices in the Memorial area range from $300,000 to around $4 million. These are luxurious homes. Styles include: traditional, Old English, Georgian, contemporary, Mediterranean, colonial, and southern manor. Homes with unique, individual touches abound; for example, a charming Spanish-hacienda now on the market has many authentic style details.

Some building in the area began in the 1950s and many homes were built in the 1960s, while others were built much later. These homes are spacious; size ranges from over 4,000 square feet to over 9,000 square feet. Some of these homes have unique extras, such as a billiards room, plus a gameroom. Many lots are large as well; some are over an acre. As you would expect, many quality custom home builders built the homes in the Memorial area. Some new construction is underway; homes still under construction are available.

Public Schools

Students in most of the Memorial area attend schools in the Spring Branch Independent School District. A small part of Memorial is served by the Katy Independent School District. Both of these districts have several schools rated exemplary.

Memorial City Mall: Memorial City Mall has several anchor stores, including Target, Sears, and Macys, as well many other fine retailers, like Abercrombie & Fitch.   Cinemark 16 and a host of great eating spots make a trip to the mall a memorable experience.

Terry Hershey Park: Originally named Buffalo Bayou Park, this 500-acre park on the banks of Buffalo Bayou gives Memorial area residents a great place to hike and bike. Plans are underway to greatly expand the 12 ½ mile trail, extending it north to the top of Addicks Dam. The trail will then branch out so that people in Wilcrest, Dairy Ashford, and Kirkwood can bike to the park and ride lot, and some of their workplaces.

The Memorial Hermann Healthcare System serves the Memorial area with the  state-of-the-art Memorial City Medical Center. This medical complex offers an outstanding Heart and Vascular Institute, a Cancer Center, a Joint Replacement Center, and a special children’s section in the emergency room, as well as many other services.
